MAIL ART NEWS

Buster Cleveland, famed throughout the network for his zany, meticulously made Dadaist collages and later in the East Village galleries of the early 1980s, died on 6 May in Queens at the age of 55.

Born as James Trenholm in Chicago, he studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the San Francisco Art Institute, Cleveland was active in the Mendocino Area Dadaists (M.A.D.) and (Bay Area Dadaists(B.A.D.), California-based organizations of artists whose intent was to recreate the ephemeral works of early European Dadaists such as Kurt Schwitters and Marcel Duchamp. He was also co-director of two International Dada Conferences, Inter-Dada 80 and Inter-Dada 84.

He was represented by Gracie Mansion Gallery. As the readers of Umbrella know, one of his most widely seen works were those using the covers of Artforum magazine. He always added pictures of friends, self-portraits, logos from cigarette packs and kitsch and Pop Art images to the original covers. He then made color laser prints of the collages, reducing them to postcard size and subscriptions were requested for the series called Art For Um for $100 a year.

Buster was a consummate artist, an articulate historian of Dada, and a friend of Umbrella. He was instrumental in the two Inter-Dada fests, with Cavellini guest of honor both in Ukiah and in San Francisco. The Buster Cleveland Collection, a collection of the artist's works and papers, is housed in the University of Iowa's Alternative Traditions in the Contemporary Arts.

SOLIDARITY

Finally, Humberto Nilo Saavedra , Director and Academic of the Arts School of the University from Chile was virtually tossed out of his position for the reactionary pinochetists sectors of the University. The drop that filled the glass was the exhibition of mailart "STOP: freedom, diversity and pluralism" in the Art Contemporary Museum of Santiago that Humberto Nilo had organized in order to defend of the persecutions that he was supporting for long years. It is symptomatic that Humberto Nilo has already been expelled from their class in the University under the dictatorship of Pinochet. Today, that Pinochet occupies a position of lifetime senator , his acolytes lift their heads and are collecting vengeance on all those that, like Humberto Nilo, had played a progressive paper in the field of the culture and has been opposed, always, to all form of authoritarism and vassalage in the teaching of the arts.

Humberto Nilo had also showed, in 1996, in the Arts School the exhibition of homage to the recently deceased Guillermo Deisler, another pursued by the dictatorship of Pinochet, also academic arts in the University from Chile, in Antofagasta, who should flee as quickly as possible from Chile with all their family to an uncertain destination under the threat of death. Those same dictatorial sectors are today expelling all the professors and professors that they have said NO to the brutality and to the constant violation of human rights.

In the face of the fear that the menaces and the brutality of the regime could put the life of Humberto Nilo and his relatives in danger, we want to begin this world campaign requesting to all the mailartists and networkers of the whole world to send expressions of support to their postal address so that, somehow, his offenders could not carry out their threats: Humberto Nilo Saavedra

Surpu Masu: Conflagration of Sins. The release of sins, shames, regrets, and embarrassments, to free yourself to be more creative, to be more your true self. Society punishes the creative and the "different" by telling us our desirs are sins. Whether you desire to be creative, to share your creativity freely, to love more than one, to love the same gender, or to enjoy your body whatever its shape and size, society tells you these desires are wrong, and tries to punish you. At Burning Man '98, an ancient ritual will be revived. Surpu Masu, the scapegoat, will eat our sins, and take them with it in an ancient ritual of conflagration and relinquishment. Once relinquished of our "sins" we will be free to act on our desires, to arm our creativity with our will and love, to be ourselves and cherish our difference. Describe your sins, shames, regrets, or embarrassments in any medium or tehcnique. Then place them in an envelope. (We won't open the envelopes. The sins you describe are a matter for you and the goat). The sins will be displayed (in their sealed envelopes) at the Artist's Republic of Fremont camp at Burning Man. Then on Friday, the sins will be gathered together, eaten by the goat, and consumed in a ritual involving all the participants at Burning Man. The ritual will take place Friday evening, 4 September. Any medium, any technique. Send to Conflagration of Sins, P.O. Box 31848, Seattle, WA 98103. Deadline: 25 August 1998.
